Darren Hare said supporters at last night's game away to Herne Bay saw the best and worst of his Hastings United team.
After Jay May gave United the lead during a splendid start, the U's fell away with a second half performance which manager Hare doesn't want to see repeated.
He said: "The way we started the game I felt we could've gone on and won it comfortably. The first 20 minutes was really good; it was the best I've seen us play. We kept it simple, showed good movement and linked up well with Jay.
"But in the second half we stopped doing that and we didn't have a chance to get a grip on the game at all. For some reason the game changed and we ended up hanging on.
"Herne Bay pressed us really well and they bombarded our box a bit, although we defended well. It was a frustrating night and in the end I actually think it was a point gained because we could've quite easily lost that."
While acknowledging that injuries and Matt Bodkin's stomach virus didn't help United's cause, Hare still expected better from his players.
"We still had enough quality to do better than we did," he continued. "The players have done terrific so far, but they know that level of performance is not good enough.
"I found it really hard to defend them after the second half display; it lacked a little bit of passion and fire, and I was a bit surprised. We've got to man up and be stronger mentally because teams are going to come at us.
"A few words were spoken after the game, we had a few heart to hearts and I'm hoping we don't see that sort of performance again. There's one or two who didn't give as best as they could've done. It was a frustrating night."
