Little Common Football Club’s penalty jinx struck once again as they went down 2-0 at home to new league leaders Storrington on Saturday.
The Commoners missed a spot-kick for the third time this season while the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One game was still goalless and Storrington opened the scoring soon afterwards.
Common welcomed back Dan Estherby, Paul Feakins and Billy Trickett to the starting line-up as they went in search of their first league win in four outings.
In what was a relatively even affair, neither goalkeeper had a busy afternoon as both defences held firm for the most part. Little goalmouth action ensued in the first half, but it was the Swans who had the best opportunity to open the scoring after 30 minutes when a cross into the area was headed over with an empty goal gaping. The nearest Common came was when an Estherby cross just eluded Lewis Hole and the ball rolled out to safety.
Common had a glorious chance to draw first blood 10 minutes into the second half when Jamie Crone was bundled over in the area and a penalty was awarded. Crone took the kick himself, but struck his effort the wrong side of the post.
Moments later it was the visitors who struck. Common failed to clear an incorrectly awarded corner and the ball was smashed into the top corner of the net by John Rhodie from the edge of the area.
Common pressed for an equaliser, but lacked their normal creativity and were unable to fashion many clearcut chances. Hole saw two headers fall the wrong side of the post and Ricky Mote’s mazy run into the area was thwarted by the visiting goalkeeper at his near post.
With time running out, the Commoners opted to play three in defence as they pushed more players forward in hope of salvaging a point, but a stray pass in the 90th minute allowed Storrington a quick break and Josie Stakim lifted the ball over Matt Cruttwell to seal the points for the visitors.
Common: Cruttwell, Sherwood, R. Mote (Wells), Brown (MacDonald), Ammoun, Eldridge, Feakins (Bristow), Trickett, Hole, Crone, Estherby.
