Little Common’s footballers continued their fine end of season form by registering their fifth consecutive victory.
Common struck four times after the break to win 4-1 away to AFC Uckfield today (Saturday) and move up to fourth in Sussex County Football League Division Two.
Player-manager Russell Eldridge made one change to the starting line-up with Adam Smith coming in to replace the unavailable Martin Denny. An uneventful first half saw neither team create many clearcut chances with the bobbly surface proving difficult.
Common fashioned the first opening when Lewis Hole flicked a ball on to Eldridge, but his effort was lifted over the bar as well as the onrushing goalkeeper. At the other end, Jon Saunders was on hand to clear the danger following a mix-up in the Common defence.
Uckfield took the lead in the 32nd minute following the controversial award of a penalty by the assistant referee for an alleged push by Steve Mote on the edge of the area.
The hosts held their lead until the interval, but a stern half time talking to saw Common come out as a changed team in the second half and it was not long before Smith equalised with a ferocious strike from the edge of the area into the top corner following Hole’s throughball.
Common were now dominating proceedings and Smith saw another effort saved by the home keeper before Jared Lusted’s shot rebounded off the goalkeeper’s legs. Hole gave Common the lead in the 69th minute with a delightful lob over the stranded home goalkeeper following Eldridge’s throughball for his 30th league goal of the season.
The introduction of Steve Morris gave the home defence no respite and he made an almost immediate impact with another lob over the goalkeeper to effectively seal the points for the visitors.
Uckfield almost pulled a goal back, but Saunders was on hand to tip a long range effort over the crossbar. Hole had the final word by adding his second and Common’s fourth in injury time after a neat one-two between Vaughan and Morris saw the latter cross for Hole to prod home at the near post.
Common: Saunders, Cooper, Mote, Eldridge, McEniry, J. Smith (Elliott-Noye), Vaughan, Brown, Hole, A. Smith (Richardson), Lusted (Morris).
