HASTINGS United opened their pre-season friendlies with a 1-0 win away to County League Westfield.

A second half goal from trialist Alex Howell settled matters at The Parish Field on Saturday afternoon.

The annual match was rather spoilt by heavy rain that engulfed the ground not long after kick-off.

Howell, one of several half time substitutes, netted just beyond the hour mark with a net finish from 10 yards.

Also turning out for the U’s were Matt Whitehead, Lee Carey, Zac Attwood, Josh Jirbandey, Danny Ellis, Scott Manning and player-boss Sean Ray.

New faces included 17-year-old keeper Joe Winchester and former Brighton & Hove Albion youth skipper Tom Vickers, while Jordan Woodley returned to United colours.

The U’s are due to visit Sevenoaks Town tomorrow night (Tuesday) before welcoming Brighton to The Pilot Field next Saturday.
