Rye United reached the Sussex County League John O’Hara League Cup semi-finals with a 4-3 win over Mile Oak.

Just three days before their FA Vase last 16 tie against Leverstock Green, Rye’s starting line-up featured just two players who began the league game at home to Wick on Saturday.

They fell behind to a ninth minute goal by Aaron Ransom, and although Luke Woodley equalised eight minutes later, Ryan Pretlove put mid-table Division Two outfit Oak back in front in the 19th minute.

Rye were the better side during the second half following the introduction of Liam Upton and his two goals in the space of six minutes either side of the midway point in the half put the hosts ahead for the first time.

Oak levelled things up again through a 75th minute free kick by Chris Paine, but Duncan McArthur’s penalty four minutes later put Rye through to a last four tie against Lancing or Rustington.

Rye (4-4-1-1): Winchester; Fogarty (Alabi 56), Ramsay (Upton HT), Tuppenney, Moreby; Woodley, Gall, J. Watson, McArthur; Pallen (Buay 89); D. Clarke. Subs not used: J. Clarke, Bourne.

A full report, along with a comprehensive FA Vase preview, will appear in tomorrow’s Rye Observer.
