Hastings United were brought crashing back down to earth on Saturday.

After the high of their midweek win at East Thurrock United came the low of a 5-0 drubbing away to Bury Town in the Ryman Football League Premier Division.

United goalkeeper Lloyd Anderson allowed a deflected Kieran Leabon shot to slip through his grasp in the 10th minute and Lee Smith doubled Bury’s lead 23 minutes later.

Sam Reed made it three in the 69th minute before Russell Short and Craig Nurse punished defensive errors to complete the rout. Kenny Pogue had an effort superbly saved and headed wide in United’s best moments.

Elsewhere, Rye United remain top of Sussex County Football League Division One after a strike from substitute Shaun Loft gave them a 1-0 victory away to St Francis Rangers.

Sidley United won 2-1 after extra-time away to Dorking Wanderers in the Sussex RUR Charity. Jason Taylor put Sidley ahead towards the end of normal time and Steve Morris got the winner just before half time in extra-time.

Bexhill United sprung a surprise by winning 2-1 away to higher grade AFC Uckfield in the same competition thanks to a brace of goals from Dominic Clarke.

In Sussex Division Two, Westfield drew 0-0 at home to Littlehampton Town, while Little Common lost 3-1 at home to Rustington despite a Jordan Wood goal.

Full reports on each of these matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
