Funnell double earns vital victory

A captain's performance from Mark Funnell gave Bexhill United three precious points in their battle against relegation.

Funnell scored both goals as United won 2-0 at home to Midhurst & Easebourne in a Sussex County Football League Division Two six-pointer on Saturday.

He turned home David Harris' low cross for the 38th minute opener and pounced on a defensive mistake to fire home his second in the fifth minute of first half added time.

The result moved Bexhill up to fourth-bottom - above Midhurst on goal difference - and put them three points above a Storrington side which occupies the second relegation spot.

Elsewhere, Rye United ended a run of three successive defeats with a 1-1 draw at home to Littlehampton Town, Dominic Cruttenden equalising at the end of the first half.

Westfield recorded an identical result at home to bottom-of-the-table Sidlesham thanks to a second half leveller from Dominic Clarke – his third goal in as many matches.

Mile Oak became the first team to do the double over Sidley United this season on the back of a 1-0 victory at Gullivers via the division's leading scorer Danny Curd.

Little Common's promotion hopes in Division Three suffered another setback with a second successive 3-1 loss at home to one of their rivals.

After last weekend's reverse against second-placed Haywards Heath Town, this time it was leaders Clymping who left with all the points despite Jared Lusted's consolation.
