Golf club crowned county champs

Sedlescombe Golf Club has won a county inter-club seniors knockout competition for the first time.

The Kent Street club clinched the Gilbert Print Plate courtesy of a three matches to one victory over Crowborough Beacon at Mid Sussex GC.

Scores: Harry Coleman (handicap 10) & Pat Martin (20) beat David Ball (10) & Peter Billcliff (15) 2&1; Ron Winchester (11) & Glen Croucher (17) beat Colin Wilkins (13) & Mike Theobald (14) 4&3; Peter Rootes (17) & Dave Horwood (15) lost to Alan Burdon (14) & Roger Davey (11) 3&2; David Wright (18) & Paul Hill (20) beat Claude Mackellow (10) & John Hoadley (9) 5&3.

Sedlescombe edged out Cowdray Park on the first extra hole in the semi-finals last month, while Crowborough saw off Ifield 3- in the other last four tie.

Sedlescombe won 3- at home to Waterhall in the quarter-finals, on the first extra hole away to Piltdown in the last 16 and 3-1 at home to The Nevill in round two.

Run by the Sussex County Golf Union, the Gilbert Print Plate is contested by those clubs eliminated in the first and second rounds of the Cyril Blake Cup.

Sedlescombe were beaten 2-1 away to Royal Eastbourne in round two having received a bye through round one.

The result came just six days after Sedlescombe's ladies captured their first ever Sussex County Morrice Foursomes title thanks to victory over Seaford at Ifield GC.
