South Saxons rounded-off their league campaign with a narrow defeat to the champions.

Saxons were edged out 1-0 away to Horsham II in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One on Saturday to finish seven points behind their opponents in second place.

A Horsham side which had the luxury of 15 players had more of the chances, but Saxons produced a good all-round performance in a game which could have gone either way.

The only goal came 15 minutes from time as Horsham made it 14 consecutive victories. Saxons’ man of the match was George Eldridge. A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.

Saxons will now go into a promotion play-off against South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One runners-up Ashford II at Holcombe HC on Saturday April 21.

Final standings (all played 20 matches): 1 Horsham II 54pts, 2 SOUTH SAXONS 47, 3 Penguin 37, 4 Lewes III 34, 5 Eastbourne II 31, 6 Brighton & Hove III 29, 7 Hailsham 27, 8 Crowborough 25, 9 Middleton & Bognor 18, 10 Crawley II 11, 11 Southwick 7.
