Proud Bargh stars in England victory
Badminton star Cathy Bargh has enjoyed an unforgettable few days of stunning success.
The Sedlescombe player not only played her part in steering England to glory in the McCoig Trophy but went on to claim a coveted doubles title.
"It was a very proud moment," said 47-year-old Bargh of helping England to a 14 games to nine victory over Scotland in Lancashire.
Bargh - who was hit by a bout of food poisoning the previous weekend - was playing in the over-45 age group and in that particular category England were unstoppable as won all five of their matches.
The coach at Summerfields Sports Centre won her singles 21-13, 21-7 against Scotland's Caroline King.
"There was a lot of pressure but it was a great team effort," she said.
The following day Bargh joined forces with local player Debbie Rigby to contest the over-45 women's doubles at the Lancashire Senior Tournament.
They emerged unscathed from the group stage following commanding wins over Eileen Meager (Buckinghamshire) and Cathy Isherwood (Cheshire) 21-18, 21-11, and Penny Sheard (Yorkshire) and Karen Farnhill (Lancashire) 21-10, 21-5.
The semi-final was a close-fought affair but Scottish duo Robin Husthwaite and Lynn Torrance were seen off 18-21, 21-17, 21-18.
Bargh and Rigby secured the title with a 21-18, 9-21, 21-14 defeat of well established England pairing Linda Wood (Northumbria) and Ann Jenkins (Norfolk) in the final.
This success earned Bargh good points towards her ultimate goal of representing England in the World Championships in Spain later this year.
