Police were called to an ADA East Sussex Football League Premier Division match on Saturday after a referee was assaulted by a player.

It happened in the 65th minute of the game between Rock-a-Nore and Hollington United. The game was consequently abandoned with Rocks leading 5-1.

A league statement said: “The referee was assaulted by a Hollington player in the 65th minute after the referee had given the player a second yellow card, thereby dismissing him from the field of play.

“As a consequence of the assault, the referee had to abandon the game. Following the assault, the police were called and attended the scene.

“The referee has submitted a misconduct report to the Sussex County FA who will deal with the incident in co-ordination with any police action that might be taken.

“The East Sussex Football League will then review the situation regarding any further sanctions that should be applied once the SCFA and police have concluded their enquiries.

“Hollington United have convened a meeting for Monday evening, after which they will advise the league of any action that they have taken themselves regarding the situation.

“The Rock-a-Nore team and management behaved impeccably after the incident, ensuring the safety and care of the unfortunate official, and every player and official came up to him to offer their sympathy and support. The official found this so reassuring and was extremely grateful for their support at such a difficult time.”
