Rye in must-win rugby clash

RYE are bracing themselves for a must-win game in their bid for promotion from the Sussex Rugby League this weekend.

Nothing less than a victory will do at bottom-of-the-table Uckfield II on Saturday March 31 if they are to remain on course for the sole ticket into Division One.

Manager Tony Pierce said: "We're taking nothing for granted. It's 15 against 15 and you start at 0-0 so we've got to go over there and win it."

Rye are currently two points behind Hellingly with two games in hand and one above Newick having played the same number of Division Two East matches.

The New Roaders are very much the form side of the three, however, having won all of their league contests since the turn of the year.

They also thrashed Uckfield, who haven't won any of their 15 contests thus far, 45-5 on local soil back in October.

Rye's rivals both face demanding fixtures tomorrow because Newick go to Haywards Heath III and Hellingly visit Heathfield & Waldron II.

Rye warmed-up for their latest encounter by seeing off a strong Cranbrook II side 21-3 in a friendly on Saturday.

Andy Bryant scored two tries, Jamie Moore added a penalty and conversion, and John Barker kicked two penalties, while newcomers Richard Sturgeon and Chris Cordeaux settled in well.

The only downside to a performance highlighted by tremendous defence in the backs was the twisted knee suffered by Sean O'Donahue which makes him doubtful for tomorrow.
