Sedlescombe promotion secured via eBay

Sedlescombe's promotion to the top flight of the East Sussex Football League has been confirmed thanks to eBay.

The village club is in the process of making the necessary improvements to its Oaklands Park ground courtesy of the popular internet auction site.

Manager/secretary Bryan White said: "I don't think we've ever played higher than Division One so for the club and the players it was a big thing to get promotion to the Premier."

Last season's Division One champions had been facing the possibility of missing out on Premier Division football due to their non-possession of showering/washing facilities.

Players were indifferent to the prospect of using another site for their home matches and things were looking bleak until one evening White decided to search the web for a solution.

He managed to get hold of a Portakabin from Shropshire for 300 and a further 200 saw it transported across the country on an empty transit.

Build Center has supplied the accompanying materials at no cost to the club and the labour is being provided by club members. A donation has been made by a Premiership player.

Work is now well under way and Sedlescombe plan to have a shower block up and ready by the time the league makes an inspection on Saturday August 16.

Sedlescombe hope to have a new pavilion in place at some stage next year, however, and may then even pass the Portakabin on to another club in a similar predicament.

While things are looking up for Sedlescombe, Bodiam and Ridge West Garage have withdrawn from the league after failing to fill vital off-the-field positions.

Four clubs have come over from last season's Eastbourne League and a total of 82 teams are set to line-up over seven divisions come the big kick-off on Saturday September 6.
