Sedlescombe golfers into D&T quarter-finals
SEDLESCOMBE are through to the last eight of the Davies & Tate Golf Trophy for the first time after a superb 9-3 win away to Chichester on Saturday.
Having never got as far as even the previous round Sedlescombe were expecting a tough match against strong opposition.
In fact, many of the visiting team had never played the course before but this was far from evident in the morning foursomes as Sedlescombe enjoyed a clean sweep.
There was no looking back from the moment each partnership won the first two holes of their matches. Robert Prime and Trevor Saull Hunt recorded a fine 4&2 victory, Dan Gale and Simon Linklater also won on the 16th, and both James Doswell and Ollie Bettis, and Mick Anthony and Murray Thompson triumphed 4&3.
Sedlescombe only needed two-and-a-half points to secure the match, but as the first of the afternoon singles reached the 9th hole it was hard to see where those points were going to come from as Chichester led in all but one of the first five matches and were down in only one of the remaining three.
Captain Glen Croucher had anticipated a rally from Chichester so put his leading players out last. This proved crucial as Anthony, Bettis and Gale began to turn the screw in their respective matches.
As news of these scores filtered forward Sedlescombe began to battle back in the early games. Saull Hunt, who was first out, earned half a point, whilst Prime fought back from 4 down to take his match up the 18th and almost holed his approach shot from 100 yards for an eagle which would have halved the contest.
Linklater did claim the last hole of his match for a half and wins for Gale (5&4), Bettis (4&3), Anthony (6&4) and Thompson completed victory. The quarter-finals will be played on May 14.
