Video: Priory concern after slipping into bottom two

  • Hastings Priory have slid into Sussex Premier League’s bottom two
  • Priory lost by seven wickets at Cuckfield last weekend
  • Hastings have won one, lost two and had one game abandoned so far
  • Next up is a trip to leaders Horsham on Saturday
  • Priory at home to Burgess Hill in Sussex T20 Cup on Sunday

Although less than a quarter of the way through the Sussex Premier League season, Hastings Priory coach Ian Gillespie admits slipping into the two relegation places is a concern.

He said: “It’s very early days, but obviously it’s a concern that we’ve fallen down there. What we desperately need is to get back to winning ways.

“We talked about five wins to stay up. We thought we had a good shout against Brighton when it rained and we had a 50-50 with Roffey which could’ve been one of those wins.

“Looking ahead we’ve got to find those wins from somewhere and we’ve got a couple of tough games coming up.

“I don’t think at the moment it’s too damaging for confidence, but we’ve got to get things moving in the right direction and bounce back from that result on Saturday (a seven-wicket defeat away to Cuckfield).”

Probably the last thing you want coming off the back of a heavy defeat is a trip to the league leaders. But that’s the challenge which faces Hastings Priory’s cricketers as they head to Sussex Premier League pacesetters Horsham this coming Saturday.

It’s very early days, but obviously it’s a concern that we’ve fallen down there.

Gillespie said: “Horsham have started really well and it’s difficult to win up there, but we’ll look to play good, purposeful cricket, look to get a total on the board if we bat first or bowl well - and we’ve bowled well every game this season - and try to take the wickets to give ourselves a reasonable points haul and a chance to chase if we possibly can. Obviously it’s not going to be easy.”

Priory will host Burgess Hill in a Sussex T20 Cup second round tie on Sunday from 1pm.
