Puppets with Guts comes to Streets of Battle

A giant squid and a man balancing a bicycle on his head are just some of the sights visitors can expect doing a celebration of street performers on Saturday (April 30).

Streets of Battle returns this weekend with an attraction­-packed programme.

The free event was set up by the ELF (Every Last Friday) Team and is produced by local events company 18 Hours.

Mandy Curtis, director of 18 Hours, said: “Not only does Streets of Battle bring some of the best street performers in the wrold to Battle, it also gears up a team of local people with the skills to produce high quality street arts events.”

This weekend’s main attraction is Citizen Squid, a giant animated puppet coming from the world-famous Puppets With Guts.

Professional puppeteers will make its tentacles move at 1.15pm and 3.15pm.

Emmanuel and Enoch, a UK African acrobats show fresh from Britain’s Got Talent auditions, will display their skills at midday and 2.45pm.

Visitors can expect the duo to juggle hats, bowls, people and even bicycles.

Battle Youth Street Theatre will perform at 2.15pm, showcasing part of their own piece of street theatre developed especially for Streets of Battle, with support from local theatre company, Inside Out.

Their full performance can be seen in May’s Streets of Battle.

Organisers said, at 12.40pm, ‘windows will rattle’ as Section 5 Drummers unleash their ‘big sound, born from the fiery bonfire tradition’.

Dolly Delicious the stilt walking tea lady will observe proceedings from above.

Mandy said visitors to last month’s Streets of Battle described performances as ‘amazing, funny and excellent’ and even described it as ‘the best street arts I’ve seen’.
