Remembering their sacrifice 100 years on

This weekend is Remembrance Sunday, and it is a particularly special one as we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War 1. On this day, we commemorate the brave soldiers who fought for our country in the First World War, and particularly those who lost their lives.

The attractions of high speed rail

Since becoming your MP in 2010, improving our transport links has always been a top priority of mine. As I often have to commute for my work in Parliament, I am aware that it takes far too long to travel along the coast and to make journeys to London. Delivering high speed rail will ease commuters’ travels as well as attracting jobs and investment to our area. High speed journeys will boost our local economy and draw more people to our fantastic town.

Brexit brings fresh opportunities for the Hastings Fishing Fleet

Since I was first elected as the MP for Hastings and Rye in 2010, I have made it my priority to ensure we get a fairer deal for our fishermen who have struggled for too long under the Common Fisheries Policy and are greatly limited by their quotas. Hastings is home to one of the oldest fishing fleets in the nation - dating back to the Domesday Book – and we are also home to the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe.

A birthday to be very proud of

I love birthdays – mine is coming up and I hope my family know I love surprise parties. Yesterday, it was the 70th Birthday of our National Health Service. The NHS is a fantastic public service which makes Britain stand out amongst other nations. Whilst the NHS has changed a lot since its creation, we must also ensure that we safeguard the service for future generations.

Landing sustainable fishing deals

When I was first elected in 2010, I carefully chose the subject for my Maiden Speech which is always a terrifying moment for an MP. I chose to make it about jobs - of the present and the future - and specifically about protecting our fishing industry. Since then, I have been fighting for our fishermen to get a fairer share of quota allocation. I have often met with Minister George Eustice MP and had local fishermen raise their concerns directly to the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to see what Government can to do help. The quota is now significantly more than it was in recent years.

Funding to keep a healthy NHS

Our health is one of the most important things in day to day life, so it makes sense that it is also a major part of the Government. In Britain we are fortunate to have an outstanding health service in the NHS. It is a service that delivers cutting edge care free at the point of use when we most need it. Our health service is built by the hard work of dedicated doctors and nurses who help patients and save lives.

Make Millicent & Muriel proud with your vote

Anyone walking near Parliament recently will have noticed the addition of a brand new statue of Dame Millicent Fawcett standing strong overlooking Parliament Square and the Palace of Westminster. This fantastic piece of art, and now history, was created by Gillian Wearing and is the first statue of a woman to have a place on Parliament Square.

The attractions of an English summer

Us Brits are famous for our obsession with the weather - our need to start every ice breaking conversation with some meteorological observation, and never more so than the grateful way we shake off the end of winter. Hopefully we are finally at that moment!

Standing up for our future farmers

When I am asked about the future of our country’s farming and agricultural sector following Brexit, I can give reassuring news! This week, the Government launched an open consultation on the future of farming to get farmer’s views on new agricultural proposals.
