New speciality coffee shop gets set to open in Steyning town centre

Businessman Adam Moseley, who used to work with the emergency services, plans to open the shop – called Tamp & Grind – in Steyning High Street.

He is currently seeking approval from Horsham District Council to vary the conditions of planning consent to allow him to change the coffee shop’s opening hours and for customers to use the premises’ rear garden.

Adam, who grew up and went to school in Steyning, is due to open a similar coffee shop in Lancing on Sunday (October 29) after having operated the business there Since December 2022 via a mobile tuk-tuk.

He says his new Steyning coffee shop will fill a gap in the market. “Currently, there is no presence of specialty coffee shops in the area,” he said.

In a statement to the district council, he said: “The proposed coffee shop will provide a communal gathering space, contributing to the social and cultural vibrancy of Steyning. It will serve as a hub for residents and visitors to meet, socialise and relax.”

He added: “Being from the area, we are aware of the history of Steyning as a quaint market town in West Sussex, known for its vibrant community, historic architecture, and bustling high street. We have noticed that the town has experienced a significant shift in recent years, with an increasing demand for high-quality food and beverage offerings.

"Steyning High Street in particular, being the heart of the community, has witnessed a growing interest in specialty shops, cafes and restaurants.”

And many residents agree. A number of people have sent letters of support to the council. Said one: “It would be highly advantageous to be able to access it at early hours too for many who are wishing to acquire that fresh brew at the start of their early day, whatever activities they are about to engage in. It’s often comforting to know we can get a local coffee for the journey ahead.”

And another added: “As a local business owner on the High Street, it's essential that businesses be able to develop and flourish to help in the economic development of Steyning.”
