People who are scammed often experience loneliness, shame and social isolation.

Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to "Take a Stand Against Scams".

Recently featured on national television, including the BBC’s Rogue Traders consumer rights program, the new Friends Against Scams website has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about scams and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protection – and the site was created in Hastings by established local web design agency FAT promotions Ltd.

“Sadly scams are something we see every day online” says FAT promotions’ managing director Fiona Allman-Treen, “so to be involved in a national scheme aimed at stamping them out is a real honour. We were bursting with ideas as to how to get the message across that we CAN all play our part to make people more aware, so they don’t get caught out. "Plus the project plays to our strengths of building e-learning systems and our experience of developing public sector and government websites so we were right at home.”

The website features a simple online learning module to get people started on the path to scam awareness, as well as advanced event creation and registration so the public can organise and attend meetings to learn more about the problem and what can be collectively done to make scams a thing of the past.
