Six of the best: Hybrids

As their popularity continues to mushroom, we pick out half a dozen of the best hybrid cars currently available

This year, more British motorists will buy hybrid cars than ever before. If you’re planning to be one of them, the choice is good and wide – which means that where once there were only a few options on the market, these days you need to be thinking in terms of what’s right and wrong for your needs.

Hybrids are available in more or less every segment now. Here’s our choice of the best half-dozen from across the new car market:

1: Volvo XC90 T8

With a twincharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and plug-in electric drive, the XC90 T8 boasts an official emissions figure of 49g/km and a claimed range of 27 miles in full EV mode. It’s fast, too, and every bit as classy as the rest of the XC90 range – but prohibitively expensive to buy.

2: VW Golf GTE

First and foremost, this is a Golf. It’s also able to do up to 31 miles on battery power alone – and while it’s not quite as entertaining as the Golf GTI, it’s still a very enjoyable car to drive.

3: BMW i3

The i3 is primarily a full EV, but it counts as a hybrid as you can get a model will a small petrol generator to keep the batteries juiced. Light weight and a low centre of gravity means it’s an unexpected treat to drive, with really enjoyable handling.

4: Toyota Prius

Gone are the days when the Prius traded merely on being a hybrid. The current model is roomy and well made inside, and its dynamics put it on an even footing with traditional family hatchbacks.

5: Audi A3 e-tron

The A3 is a brilliant car full stop. It’s expensive to buy in plug-in hybrid form, but a premium cabin and sophisticated ride quality mean that if you’re speccing a company car, it’ll give you serious quality while costing sweeties to run.

6: VW Passat GTE

This brilliant plug-in hybrid is a case of saving the best to last. The Passat GTE will do 30-plus miles in full EV mode – then on a long journey cover more than 500 miles between fill-ups. It’s like any other Passat inside, too, which is to say that it’s excellent – and in Estate form, it’ll carry five adults plus more luggage than you thought you owned.
