Perhaps your own kids have flown the nest? Maybe you long cultural exchange or more company? This chance to host international students could be life-changing

A language school that’s been in Eastbourne for decades is looking for people ready to earn money from their spare room by temporarily hosting a young person or adult from abroad.

The EF community is wide ranging, with students sometimes being term time teens, adults attending a short course or summer studies or year-round candidates.

Hosts, normally based in Eastbourne and surrounding areas (no further than 60 mins via one form of public transport), give the students a safe and warm home while they study.

As well as earning money, hosts enjoy a lot of benefits. Siegi Fake has opened her home to students for years, and found it rewarding for all her family: “It’s the beginning of a long-term friendship. I have students who I am still in contact with 16 years down the line, I also love learning about their country and cultures! And it’s always full of noise and fun!’’

About the students

They come from more than 50 countries around the world – embracing the language, culture and geography is a crucial part of their stay. They often gain as much from their host family as they do from their studies.

How long is the commitment?

Some placements only last a week, others much longer. Any potential host can chat to the friendly team at EF Language School to find out what works for them.

Are hosts paid?

Yes! Fees vary depending on how long a student is placed with you, and how many students you have in your home. Some students will need or want a room of their own, others will share with fellow students, but they cannot share with host’s family members.

Do I need to have experience as a parent?

No, you don’t need to have your own family, or have young children. The team at EF Language School will talk to you about what’s involved and help you decide if it’s the right fit for you.

Support for hosts

As well as the financial rewards, there’s a 24-hour support line and an EF Host Loyalty Programme, and an EF Community Card, which gives discounts in dozens of local shops and venues.

And throughout the year there are fun events for host families – you’re never alone with EF.
