Hastings Academy, in Rye Road, emailed a letter from principal Hilary Morawska to parents and carers over the weekend to inform them of the news.

It said: “We have this weekend been made aware that a member of our school community has tested positive for Covid-19.

“We know that you will find this of concern and I wish to reiterate that we are continuing to closely monitor the situation and I have worked meticulously with a Public Health England doctor and the Trust Executive Team.

“Please be assured that for most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.”

At the end of September the school closed for two weeks following a number of cases of Covid-19.

The academy made the decision to shut due to the number of staff self-isolating.

At the time the school confirmed five cases of Covid-19, with students in direct contact with the confirmed cases sent home to self-isolate for two weeks.

Hastings Academy reopened on October 14.

In the letter to parents sent yesterday (Sunday, November 8), the academy said the school will remain open.

It added: “The students who have been in direct prolonged contact with the confirmed cases will have received an individual letter and will be learning at home, with a return date which reflects the last contact with the affected person.”

The Observer has contacted the University of Brighton Academies Trust for a comment.
