Adult social care cuts: Opposition at Rother drop-in

People raised many concerns about East Sussex County Council’s proposed £40million cuts over the next three years at the session at Battle Memorial Hall.

Battle resident Alan Russell said cutting non-statutory care will just put more pressure on hospitals.

“How many people are likely to find themselves needing statutory provision?

“There’s no quantitative analysis.”

Mr Russell said the survey was too complicated and long, especially for some disabled people whose responses are crucial, and thought there should be more than one session for the whole of Rother.

“This is the only face-to-face meeting Rother and it seems like there are going the process and it’s a bit cynical to reduce it to the bare minimum,” he said.

Officers said the turnout seemed fewer than at the Hastings drop-in yesterday where they ran out of surveys due to the amount of people.

Neil Partrick believes the cuts will affect everyone.

“It seems you either are a recipient or you know someone who is,” he said.

Concerns were made about the fact that the future of the Autism and Alzheimer’s Societies, both based in Battle.

A woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she believed the decision had already been made regardless of the consultation.

“I’m concerned about the cuts as the implication is that the decision has already been made,” she said.

“I do appreciate they have a hard time imposed from above but they do have statutory obligations and they need to make sure people are taken care of.”
