Award for gym coach who is a ‘wonderful role model’

A TEENAGER from Little Common has been recognised for his efforts to encourage young people into gymnastics.

Liam Noakes, 18, is celebrating after winning the Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award for June. He was nominated for the accolade for his role as a trainee coach at the 1066 Gymnastics Academy, where he helps coach freestyle gymnastics.During his time at the academy, Liam has been dedicated to improving his coaching ability and achieving the qualifications needed to train others. As part of these efforts he recently spent two weeks at a voluntary training camp, as well as achieving a British Gymnastics Level 1 coaching certificate.

Liam was nominated after impressing senior coaches at the academy. Head coach Matthew Hart credits him with improving membership numbers and said: “Liam has been a tremendous help as a trainee coach and a wonderful role model to our young members. He has been particularly instrumental in the success of our Freestyle Gymnastics classes which appeal to teenage boys and we have enjoyed building our membership in this area; traditionally one very difficult for a gymnastics club to appeal to.”

The Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award is sponsored by Spectrum Financial Services and the Hastings Observer Series. Each month, the award is presented to someone aged 18 or under who has excelled in a particular sport, shone in their academic studies or is fulfilling an important role on a voluntary basis in either their own home or in the community.

As part of his prize, Liam will receive a complimentary meal for two, as well as £100 for the 1066 Gymnastics Academy.

Jeremy Over from Spectrum presented Liam with his prize and a certificate of achievement. Jeremy said: “I had the opportunity to watch one of the classes in action and the standard of coaching and gymnastics was very impressive. I’m very pleased to present Liam with the Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award.”

Liam plans to continue helping out at the 1066 Gymnastics Academy and is looking forward to training for his British Gymnastics Level 2 coaching qualification.
