Bexhill's Poppy Run

He's an athlete not a soldier but Bexhill Runners' Paul Holdaway is heading his own campaign to support the men and women of Britain who fought for their country.

Paul, owner of Lifestyle Gym in Western Road, organised a Poppy Half Marathon in November in which 400 brave souls grappled their way through appalling weather conditions to complete the half marathon course.

Bexhill Runners managed to raise £3,500 in this their third annual Poppy run and Paul was then able to present this money to members of a local branch of the Royal British Legion.

They were Vincent Orchard, poppy appeal organiser, and Ernie Eldridge, president of Little Common RBL.

The group was joined by Caroline Shepherd, who is community fundraiser for East Sussex RBL.

Paul said: “Historically Bexhill Runners had previously organised a race in November, so when it was decided to hold a half marathon it just seemed like a good idea to run it in aid of the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal.

“There were no other sporting events that supported the Poppy Appeal, so it made the half marathon a unique event and a great way through sport to encourage the younger generation to get involved and to raise awareness of the work of the British Legion. “It is a worthwhile cause, and something that members of the public can easily identify with.

“The Poppy Appeal does so much to help current service men and women; it is not just about the older generation of service men and women. As a club we have learnt more about the extent of the work of the British Legion and hope to continue to support the Poppy Appeal by holding more races and raising more money.”

If anyone wants to enter the next Poppy Half Marathon this will be held on 13 November 2011, more details of how to enter can be found at www.poppyhalf.co.uk
