Bin And Done It

SEASIDE visitors are being urged not to take a holiday from recycling when they come to Littlehampton.

New recycling bins along the seafront mean that tourists and residents can be just as green-minded on the beach as they are at home.

And visitors who do their bit have the added incentive of being given a free drink by Tidy Arun officials who are promoting the scheme among beachgoers.

Six green recycling bins, taking drink cans and plastic bottles, have been placed on the promenade next to ordinary litter bins.

The contents will be weighed when the bins are emptied to check how much waste is being saved from going to landfill dumps.

Elizabeth Irvine, waste education and promotion officer for Arun District Council, said: "We have had a very positive response from tourists. Children have told me: 'It's a good idea. I do this at home'."

The initiative has been launched against a background of West Sussex having just five years of landfill tipping space remaining.

*The Sierra Leonean nationals whose trip to Littlehampton ended in piles of litter have been told not to return if they're going to make a mess.
