Blaze at 15th century Angmering farmhouse

A BLAZE has ripped through a 15th century farmhouse, forcing the owners to flea.

The fire, at Avenals Farm, off Water Lane, Angmering, started in the roof just before 11pm last night (Thursday, September 17), and 12 fire crews fought to bring it under control, though a number were still at the property at 9.30am today.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: "Two adults and a teenage boy were in the property at the time, but were unaware of a developing fire in their roof loft until debris fell into the airing cupboard and bathroom area, setting of the smoke alarms."

They worked to salvage personal belongings, ornaments and furnishings, and a tea, of Red Cross volunteers provided temporary shelter to the family.

This morning, the roof was said to be 30 per cent damage, and the house 10 per cent, by heat and smoke.

The fire is believed to have been started accidentally.
