Bognor pilot is flying high

A pilot from Bognor Regis has been named as one of the world's greatest female flyers.

Barbara Harmer, who was born in the town in 1954, has been featured in a book which chronicles the achievements of women in the hundred years since they first took to the air.

The 100 Greatest Women in Aviation History (19.99), by Liz Moscrop and Sanjay Rampal, is being published in October.

Ms Harmer's claim to aviation fame occurred in 1993 when she became the first woman to fly Concorde. She is still the only female pilot of a supersonic airliner.

She left school at 15 to become a hairdresser and paid for her initial pilot exams. She is still a pilot and today flies for British Airways.
