Bonfire and fireworks event cancelled

A BONFIRE and fireworks event in Storrington has been cancelled.

Storrington Bonfire Society has announced the annual event has been cancelled because no suitable site could be found. The event had been programmed for October 27.

Society chairman Tony Vaughan said the bonfire and fireworks had been held in the Priory Fields with permission of the Norbertine Order for a number of years. However the fields are now planted with vines and the site is consequently no longer available.

A number of other sites were considered but deemed unsuitable, and an appeal for suggested sites was unsuccessful.

Mr Vaughan said: "It is very disappointing we have had to cancel the event this year. It has been run successfully for many years and has always received great support from the local community.

"We believe that events like this provide a safe environment for families to watch and enjoy a huge bonfire and spectacular firework display while avoiding the risks associated with smaller displays in back gardens."

Mr Vaughan added: "We intend to continue the search for sites for next year's event."

Previous bonfires have involved a torchlight procession, a large themed fire, which last year was based on the great fire of London, and a firework display.

Approximately 500 is donated to various charities from the proceeds each year.
