An estimated 2,500 people packed onto the field for Northiam Bonfire Society’s third Procession and Fireworks last Saturday.
It was the biggest event in the village’s history in the estimation of bonfire society member Karen Ayling.
Bonfire in Northiam has ignited with crowds and enthusiasm growing each year.
Karen Ayling said: “The rain waited until the first firework, but failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd who had enjoyed the spectacle of 11 Bonfire Societies and four drumming groups parading down Main Street.
“The Procession paused for a moment as the Poppy was lit at the War Memorial before continuing on its fiery, noisy, way into the village and back for a huge bonfire and a spectacular firework display which lit up the sky and shook the ground.
“Local residents praised the way the Society had brought back a bit of fun and excitement for all age-groups – and how quickly everything had been cleared away.
“After a brief rest for the working week, Bonfire Societies will head to Staplecross for Ewhurst and Staplecross Bonfire starting at 7.15pm on Saturday October 31.
