Boris Johnson is the '˜life and soul of the party but he's not the man you want driving you home afterwards', Hastings and Rye's MP said last night.

During an ITV debate in the run up to the EU referendum, Amber Rudd, who is also secretary for energy and climate change, told the former Mayor of London and leading member of the leave campaign that on immigration ‘the only number he is interested in’ was number ten, alluding to his Downing Street ambitions.

She argued that they had heard ‘complete fantasy’ from the vote leave campaign, which reminded her of The Wizard of Oz, as when you pulled back the curtain there was ‘nothing there’.

She said: “And from Boris well he’s the life and soul of the party, but he’s not the man you want driving you home at the end of the evening. This is a very serious choice we have to make.”

Last night Mr Johnson said: “The remain campaign are offering absolutely no solution whatever, we are proposing an Australian-style British solution, which would allow people to come in on the basis of the skills they have to offer our country and our economy, a points based system and it would be fairer because we currently discriminate massively against people from the 92 per cent of the world who do not come from the European Union while having unrestricted access to people from 28 countries without being able to even check whether they have criminal records.”

In reply Ms Rudd said: “This is a complex issue and there isn’t a silver bullet and I know that’s what Boris and his team would like to have, but you have to look at the numbers and I fear the only number Boris is interested in is the one that says number ten.”
