MORE than 600 shoe-boxes jammed full of useful items are heading to Belarus after a mammoth effort by Littlehampton and Arundel Lions Clubs.

The boxes, containing toothbrushes, toothpaste, pens, pencils, envelopes and other toiletries, will be shipped out to the poverty stricken area on Saturday.

Littlehampton Lions' president David Cook said: "Belarus is an area where a lot of radiation from Chernobyl fell.

"A lot of people are farming on contaminated land, so there are health issues as well as poverty."

Lions clubs in the south of England launched a shoe box appeal as a way of doing their bit to help.

Two schools Lyminster Infants in Littlehampton and Georgian Gardens in Rustington joined in and the appeal was also supported by local business, who provided boxes and cheaper items to fill them.

In total, Littlehampton Lions made up around 350 boxes and Arundel Lions contributed a further 200 to the appeal.
