There was an extra buzz this year with the event falling on November 5 and coinciding with the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

Bonfire societies from across Sussex formed a procession of flaming torches along the High Street. The route was extended this year to take in Caldbec Hill.

The evening culminated with a spectacular bonfire and fireworks display on the Abbey Green.

Brexit provided the topical theme for this year’s effigy with a scene inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry with the words ‘950 years of in out, in out, shake it all about’.

Matt Southam, of Battel Bonfire Boyes, said: “It was a really good day and evening. The weather was perfect and all passed of peacefully.

“We re-introduced a firework waterfall which happened in front of the Abbey. This hasn’t happened since the mid 90’s so it was great to see it back.

“The procession was smaller than the past few years as we didn’t have any Lewes based societies but we were still well supported by the local societies.”

Money collected on the night will be donated to local charities and good causes.

The local bonfire season continues on Saturday November 12 at Rye.
