Businessmen told to buck up

Business owners around Bognor Regis have been urged to improve themselves to be ready for regeneration.

The town's chamber of commerce chairman and president, Nick Stuart-Nicolson, said the firms had to be ready for the upgrading of the town. It was the chamber's role to encourage businesses to capitalise on the new opportunities.

'However, '˜new' will not be enough. Bognor now needs to polish up its '˜quality' image and to improve on what we already have,' he stated. 'We need to attract people to the town by being seen as a leading shopping and business environment,' he said at the chamber's latest executive committee meeting.

'We have assurances that the new developments will be of very high quality. Our challenge is to match this expectation with high quality businesses.

'The message from the chamber is that we must meet this challenge head on, sharpen up our current image and develop our retail offer in readiness for the good times ahead.'

A 100m redevelopment of the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites is being planned by developer St Modwen Properties.

Details of the proposed scheme are expected to be revealed this autumn. The seafront site will have a leisure theme in a landmark building, along with flats and a hotel.
