Call for arty children to craft safeguarding squad’s new logo

BUDDING young artists in the Gazette area could be rewarded with a £50 prize for showing off their creativity.

Children aged between 11 and 14 are being called upon to design the new logo for the West Sussex Local Safeguarding Children Board (WSSCB).

The WSSCB plays a vital role in helping to keep vulnerable children and their families safe.

The current logo is in need of a facelift so the board has decided to create the competition, which could see young artists and their respective schools each rewarded with a £50 voucher if their design is chosen.

The winning entree should reflect some or all of the concepts close to the heart of the organisation – safety, support, children and families, warmth and friendliness.

The idea was the brainchild of John Thompson, who is a governor at St Mary’s CE Primary School, in Climping, and a member of the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) – an off-shoot of the WSSCB, whose role it is to ensure everyone involved in safeguarding does their best to look after those children and their families who need support.

He said: “The LSCB is about children, so it seemed sensible for them to design a logo that they liked and would present a positive image to children.”

Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for children, said: “We want to involve the child’s voice in the whole safeguarding process more and raise the profile of children’s safeguarding generally.

“We know there are a lot of talented artists in our schools and hope that by working together through this competition we can do this.”

Entries should be able to be reduced to about 3cm square, while submissions can be any size up to a maximum of 25cm square with one, two or four colours.

Artwork can be hand-drawn, painted, or designed on computers.

All entries should be accompanied by a note containing the entrant’s name, address, age and name of school.

Designs should be sent to Sheila Holman, Safeguarding Unit, Bognor Medical Centre, West Street, Bognor Regis, PO21 1UT.
