Call for Arun council to take action on flooding

Roger Nash, a Labour councillor for Pevensey, said: “We are less than happy with the way Arun District Council has responded to problems caused in Bognor and Littlehampton.

“The council will need to take a close look at what its procedures are in the future.

“It has worried us the way the council has approached the situation. There has been very little direction, help or advice.

“People who have rung up asking for sandbags have been told it is not up to the council to provide them.

“But people will often look to their local authority in an emergency. In the days of the former Arun Works Unit, they would have been provided in those circumstances.”

Nigel Lynn, Arun District Council’s chief executive, said his staff had helped to set up three rest centres across the district in 24 hours during the flooding.

“As a district council, our role is to support the emergency services in their response to this incident.

“Working with others, our priority is always to help people who have been evacuated from their homes, ensuring they have somewhere safe and dry to stay and helping with housing advice,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to ensure we have been able to do our very best for those people who have been forced to leave their homes.”
