WITH summer underway Camber has been named as having one of the best beaches in Sussex.

As well as being a magnet for bathers, Camber Sands is also a go-to place for water sports enthusiasts according to top Kayaking magazine Sitons.

Sitons rolled out a summer-long UK beach survey last year to identify British beach habits.

They say the response was unprecedented with more than 2,500 people submitting detailed data about their preferences.

Sussex emerged as being the fourth best county in the UK for its beaches, beaten only by Devon, Cornwall and Dorset and way ahead of Kent.

Camber Sands came in for special mention.

Editor of Siton Tez Plavenieks said: “Camber Sands was noted as one of the favourites with the overall beach experience rating 4 out of 5.

“Responses came from a broad spectrum of beach goers – even if they didn’t have any intention of dipping a toe.

“It goes to prove that it’s not just the south western locations of Devon, Cornwall and Dorset that attract the masses.”

Beach facilities were also rated highly and 96 percent of visitors said they would make a return trip.

The main reasons given for visiting Sussex beaches, such as Camber, were scenery, accessibility, proximity to large towns and cities and facilities

Sussex beaches are thought to be great for families with the majority of visitors to the county’s beaches spending between half and a full day in the area.

Camber has one of the busiest beaches in the South East with up to 20,000 people cramming onto the beach on hit summer weekends.

The sheer numbers of people arriving have caused problems in the past with long traffic tail-backs and residents in the village affected by parking chaos.

As well as the influx of sun seekers, Camber is extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts such as wind-surfers and kite-surfers as well as kayakers.
