Starting again in January, Sussex Coast College Hastings will be offering people the chance to qualify as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages.
The Certificate in TESOL qualification offers people the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge they need to start teaching non-English speakers.
The 2011 census (ons.gov.uk) shows that almost 6% of people in the South East are non-English speakers – the fifth highest region in the UK.
When looking at these figures more closely, the number of non-English speaking people in Hastings is just over 4%; meaning that there are approximately 4,500 people who speak very little or no English in the town.
Carrie Brooke-Mellor is a recent graduate from the Cert TESOL course at Sussex Coast College Hastings and says that the Cert TESOL course is such a rewarding experience and one of the best things she has done.
Carrie studied to become a qualified teacher of English to speakers of other languages at Sussex Coast College Hastings last year after being made redundant from her job as a secretary in a London School 2 year ago.
Carrie said: “I had experience of teaching English after completing an online course, but I knew that the TESOL qualification would allow me to teach at a much higher standard.”
“I was delighted to find the course at SCCH and from the moment I enrolled, I knew it was the right decision. The tutors were extremely helpful and lectures were clear and enjoyable.”
“The work was hard but the tutors were always available to give advice and encouragement.
“One of the most valuable sections in my opinion was the ‘Unknown language’ module in which we attempted to learn Polish from a standpoint of being a complete beginner and this gave great insight as to how a learner must feel.”
Places on the Cert TESOL course at Sussex Coast College Hastings are now available and the course will start in January. The part-time course is certified by Trinity College London and runs over one day and one evening a week for 22 weeks.
If you have ever thought about becoming a teacher, or fancy a career change, then this is the perfect time to start the Trinity College London recognised qualification.
The course fees are significantly lower than studying at university and funding and financial support may be available.
