Dr Adrian Bull said he is ‘delighted’ to join the trust, which runs Eastbourne DGH and Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

He is currently the managing director of Imperial College Health Partners and chair of the national Academic Health Science Network. Dr Bull was previously chief executive of Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 2008 to 2013. He

has lived in East Sussex since 1991.

Dr Bull said the trust, which is currently in special measures after receiving an ‘inadequate’ CQC inspection last year, is facing ‘major challenges’, but added he was looking forward to working with staff, patients and partners to provide ‘safe and effective’ services.

“I am delighted to have been appointed as Chief Executive of East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust,” he said.

“I very much look forward to joining the organisation on 11th April.

“I’m excited about the opportunity this role presents to make a positive difference, both to patient care and for the staff who do so much to deliver that care.

“The trust has been through a difficult time and is currently facing some major challenges.

“People working in it have continued to show care and compassion in looking after their patients. I am looking forward to working with staff, patients, local health and care partners and the public to ensure that we provide safe and effective healthcare services in which the people of East Sussex can be fully confident.”

Richard Sunley has held the position of acting chief executive at the trust since the departure of unpopular Darren Grayson, who quit the role in July 2015.

Dr Bull began his medical career by serving for six years as a medical officer in the Royal Navy.

He qualified as a GP before continuing as an epidemiologist at Southampton MRC Unit and Consultant in Public Health Medicine for the NHS in Yorkshire.

In 1991 Dr Bull was appointed consultant in Public Health Medicine at East Sussex Health Authority before becoming medical director for Eastbourne and County NHS Trust (which later became part of ESHT).

Dr Bull also worked in the private sector in senior executive positions at AXAPPP Healthcare then as Managing Director of Carillion Health, in which role he led the national CBI Health Policy Committee.

David Clayton-Smith, chairman of ESHT, said, “I am delighted Adrian will be joining our team.

“He is an extremely experienced and capable person with all the attributes required to lead this organisation. The trust faces significant challenges in the period ahead and I am confident that, under Adrian’s leadership and with the support of the Board, we will make the improvements necessary to deliver consistently safe, high quality, compassionate care for all our patients.”
