Climping walled garden project ready to blossom

AN INNOVATIVE youth project could help transform a historic walled garden at Climping.

Tracey-Anne Johnstone, of Unique Youth Project – a youth club based in Middleton – has joined forces with Bailiffscourt Hotel and Spa, in Climping Street, to help tidy up the land near the wall, which is located on the hotel’s estate.

She will be working with a team of volunteers from Brinsbury College’s horticultural department, as well as other young people aged between 10 and 22, to bring a new spark of life to the piece of land.

She said: “This is the perfect way to put something back into the community.

“I think this idea came as a result of a real meeting of minds. Kids love to be outdoors and getting their hands dirty.

“We’re hoping to open this up to other youth organisations too – schools, clubs and students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

“This is a perfect chance for youngsters to learn a thing or two about gardening and horticulture, as well as helping their community.”

Green-fingered volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of different activities during the clear-up.

From weeding and planting to landscape design, there will be a little something for all ages.

Tracey-Anne said: “The more hard-core and physical stuff will be undertaken by our older volunteers.

“But children will have a chance to get actively involved in the design of the new garden area.

“They can either help to pot new plants, shrubs and other fauna or draw motifs and designs. We will be able to advise them on what colours would complement each other.”

The project is set to start towards the end of April, with the initial survey work taking place at the site on Saturday.

Tracey-Anne is now hunting for a brigade of volunteers to come forward.

Applicants are asked to commit to a minimum of three hours a week, with most work taking place during weekends.

To apply, call 01903 731223. A recruitment drive for potential volunteers is also planned at the end of March.
