Council services impacted by power cut in Hove

A brief power cut in Hove caused problems for the city council this afternoon (March 2).

Just before 1pm, Brighton and Hove City Council took to Twitter and said: "Hello due to a power cut in the #Hove area we're experiencing problems with phones and internet. We'll tweet updates as we get more info. #Brighton"

The council's parking and transport team said: "Due to a power cut at Hove Town Hall we are unable to serve customers at present."

East Sussex Credit Union, which is based at the council headquarters, said: "POWER CUT AT HOVE TOWN HALL - apologies but we have no power at head office so no calls can get through and we can't access our banking system. We'll update as soon as we are back on!"

But the power East Sussex Credit Union said the power was restored around 15 minutes later.

This comes a UK Power Networks warned this morning that 'freezing rain' forecast for today could affect powerlines.

A UK Power Network spokesperson said: "Our electricity network is built to be resilient but extreme weather can damage overhead powerlines, resulting in some customers losing their electricity supply. Where this happens we work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible, and we have organised for additional staff in our contact centre and more engineers on the ground to be available to help customers whose electricity supply might be affected by the cold weather."

At 1.40pm, Brighton and Hove City Council said: "Power is now back in the Hove area.

"We're aware some phone lines and digital services are still now working, but should be back online soon.

"We have colleagues on site communicating with staff to keep people informed."
