Andrew Rogers, 54, who lives in Brighton Road, Lancing, said he was walking along the coastal path with his wife, Diana and their dog, near the Widewater beach huts in Lancing, West Sussex – where the crash reportedly happened.

He said: “I didn’t witness the crash but I could see most of the plane above the water, which was very visible.

“I saw the two occupants out of the plane and safe – just after they came out of the water.

“They were two chaps, one in his 20s roughly with a beard and rucksack and the other in his 50s, who I saw was walking with a limp. They both looked a little shaken but looked unhurt.

“I spoke to people down there who saw the crash. One said he saw the plane was making its final approach to the airport and the engine shuttered and did a belly flop into the sea.”

Mr Rogers added that the men must have handled the crash ‘incredibly well’.
