The two-year search for Lancing man Mark Manning could be at an end after human remains were discovered yesterday.

The discovery of the remains in Slaugham mark a key milestone in the search. Here is a timeline of events following Mr Manning’s disappearance.

April 19, 2014: Mr Manning was last seen at Worthing railway station by a friend, who said he had been going somewhere to buy a car he had found on online auction site eBay.

April 22, 2014: Mr Manning was reported missing to the police.

June 13, 2014: Forensics officers searched his home and garage, but found nothing.

June 17, 2014: The brother of Mark, Russell Manning, made a desperate plea for information.

April 28, 2015: Police receive anonymous tip off that the body of Mr Manning could be found around Brooklands Pleasure Park. Victim recovery dogs scour the site and fire and rescue wade through the lake. Police now treat the case as a murder investigation.

May 6, 2015: Becket Motors in Littlehampton Road was searched by police as part of the investigation.

August 14, 2015: Ten officers combed parts of St Peters Place, off Western Road, in Sompting for clues to Mr Manning’s murder.

January 28, 2016: Detectives arrested Colin Gale and charged him with Mr Manning’s murder. According to police, a 50-year-old man from Portslade and a 43-year-old Worthing man who had also been arrested on suspicion of murder were released without charge.

May 25, 2016: Human remains which police believe to be Mr Manning are discovered on Hampshire Hill near Slaugham, a force spokesperson said. A police statement said that a 50-year-old Portslade man was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and prevention of a lawful burial in connection with the murder.

July 4, 2016: According to police, Gale is due to stand trial for the murder of Mr Manning at Lewes Crown Court.
