Man arrested after incident in Hastings

A man has been arrested after a number of people were evacuated from their homes this morning (Monday, March 8) while police responded to an incident in Hastings.

Officers were called a property in Old London Road, Hastings, at approximately 5am following concerns for a man inside the premises, who police said was threatening to self harm.

Specially trained officers were called to the scene, according to police, and engaged with the man.

Just after 8am, a spokesman for the police said a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of threats to destroy or damage own property, and endanger life.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Other emergency services were also called to the scene this morning.

Police closed the road for a period of time while the incident was dealt with and a number of people living in addresses nearby were evacuated as a safety measure, police added.

The road has since reopened and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

Police apologised for the disruption and thanked the public for their patience.
