Man arrested over fake bank notes

A KENT man was arrested in Battle after he tried to use forged bank notes in the town’s shops.

The man tried to use a fake £20 at Teall’s Fruit and Veg in the High Street on Wednesday February 8.

But suspicious staff refused to take the note.

He then tried to use a fake £20 at House of Cards further down the road, but a member of the public detained the man and the police were called.

When officers searched the suspect, they found what was believed to be three small bags of cannabis.

The 20-year-old, who hails from Rochester, was arrested on suspicion of trying to pass counterfeit currency and on suspicion of possessing a Class B drug.

A number of bank notes were seized and have been sent away for forensic analysis.

The man has been released on police bail until March.

* In the wake of the arrest, members of the town’s Chamber of Commerce handed out special UV marker pens, which help identify forged bank notes, to Battle traders.
