RYE Police thanked vigilant Military Road residents who reported a pair acting suspiciously in a garden on Monday afternoon.
Police arrived at the scene within minutes of the report and arrested two men.
The men, a 36-year-old from Hastings and 34-year-old of no fixed abode, were arrested on suspicion of theft after being questioned about six bottles of alcohol they were carrying.
They have been granted bail until 21 May whilst further enquiries take place.
Sergeant Warren Downs, of Rye Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I’d like to personally thank those who called us.
“We rely on you to be vigilant in your community and tell us when you notice something suspicious. The owner of the alcohol has been traced but I would still like any witnesses to contact police on 101.”
