THERE was jubilation at Seaford Town Council this week after it was revealed vital cash for new crime-busting CCTV cameras would be available.

The council was concerned it would lose out on a 74,000 Home Office grant which had to be spent by the end of the financial year. This looked unlikely as Sussex Police had tied up Seaford s bid with similar ones yet to be completed by other councils.

None were set to get the go-ahead until June, sparking fears the money would be lost.

But Seaford town clerk Len Fisher confirmed the Home Office had agreed to make the town a special case.

'I have had excellent news from the Home Office that the money can be carried forward.

Council leader Laurie Holland added: 'It is a tremendous relief that the Home Office has given this reassurance that the money will be made available and that we now know all the hard work which has been put in has not been for nothing.

Crime hotspots earmarked for the cameras are Place Lane, Lower Church Street and near the Salts Recreation Ground on Marine Parade. It is hoped they will be up and running by the spring.

The new cameras will bring the total in Seaford to six.
