Durrington neighbours fight roads shake up

AFTER its key role in helping to defeat the Asda/ Worthing College scheme, Field Place Area Residents Association is now turning its guns on a big road shake-up.

The 120-strong membership oposes West Sussex County Council's plans for on-road cycle routes along The Boulevard, the aim of which is safer cycling.

Where the road is too narrow for safe cycling facilities alongside on-street parking, double yellow lines will be introduced to prevent parking in the cycle lanes.

Secretary Rod Winter wrote to the county council: "While it is true that the number of cars which are parked on both sides of The Boulevard reduce it in places to a single lane of traffic, the road is, nevertheless, a dual-carriageway.

"As one of the major routes into Worthing it carries a heavy volume of traffic which requires a dual-carriageway capacity to maintain a reasonably smooth and safe flow, especially during rush hours.

"The increased congestion, which will be brought about if these proposals are implemented, particularly those relating to reducing The Boulevard to a single lane, can only lead to a higher level of frustration and poor driver behaviour, which will make this road more dangerous, while also increasing the problems for emergency vehicles."

A county council spokes man, answering local residents' concerns over bus stops, said: "Unfortunately, only some of the bus stops were labelled on the consultation drawings and some were not, but there are no proposals to remove them."
