AWESOME! - that was the reaction when Rye College Wurlitzer Academy students played Blackpool’s world famous Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer theatre organ.

Nine students have just returned from a four day visit to see and play instruments throughout the north of England.

As well as playing in the legendary Ballroom in Blackpool, they even managed to fit in a backstage tour of the North Pier Theatre, complete with ghost stories, and a visit to meet the Musical Director of the Tower Circus.

They enjoyed lectures at various locations, including the Hope-Jones Museum (the creator of the theatre organ) near Manchester and learnt a lot about organ building at The Astoria Centre in Barnsley, which included making their own organ chest motors from wood, rubber cloth and seccotine fish glue
