Pews News: This Sunday, September 30, there will be a celebratory service at St Andrew's at 10.30 am, with the Bishop of Lewes, Richard Jackson, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of Rev Richard Barron's ordination. Then, from 12.30 to 3 pm approximately, the celebrations continue over at Pett village hall with a Bring and Share Lunch. This will include a brief review of Richard's past 40 years. This column joins with Richard's family, friends and parishioners past and present in congratulating him on this notable achievement in his ecclesiastical career. At Pett Methodist Chapel, the 10.45 am service on Sunday will be led by Mrs. Joan Manwaring.

Not Ruby Tuesday, but Ruby Saturday and Ruby Sunday: There’s to be an Art Exhibition and sale of work, all done by Fairlight artists, at St. Andrews Church on Saturday, September 29, open from 10.30 am until 4 pm. Admittance to the show is free. This weekend coincides with the final two days of the tower being open, from 10 am to 4 pm. In the evening, starting at 7.30 pm, there’ll be a Barn Dance to the music of the Sugar Loaf Band in Pett village hall. Entry is free, but by ticket only. As they must be obtained in advance, you’ll have to call someone if you’ve missed yours, as time is now rather short.

MOPPs today and next Friday: Today, Friday, September 28, the popular regular Keith Osbourne, will entertain with his Music for Health. The lunch today is roast chicken, with apple crumble to follow.

Next Friday, October 5, it is, amazingly, MOPP’s 10th Birthday, and the entertainment will be by the singers Jade and Char. A special day and a special lunch, of roast beef, followed by lemon tart and fruit

The Gardening Club: The Club’s October meeting, on Monday next, October 1, will welcome new visitor Kathy Lynn, who will be talking about ‘Companion Planting’. Though Kathy is new to Fairlight, her husband Michael is well known for his talks on bees. It all gets under way at 2.30 pm in the village hall. There will be, as ever, refreshments. Non-members are welcome at a cost of a mere £2 each.

Walking for Health: The Fairlight walks take place every first and third Monday of each month, leaving the village hall at 10.30 am and lasting for a little over an hour. A nice cuppa awaits your return to St Peter’s. Cas Barlow has all the details should you need them. She’s on 814229.

Throw in the towel(s): A message from Sandi Mouzer asks if anyone has any towels they no longer need, as the Players certainly require some for their forthcoming production of The Vicar of Dibley. The Players are at the village hall for rehearsals each Monday and Thursday from 7.30 pm if you’d care to drop your spares in.

The Royal British Legion’s Tea at the Waldorf: Some forty people enjoyed their tea and music ‘at the Waldorf’ at the Fairlight Lodge Hotel last Saturday. The singers were Jim Saphin and Juliette Vane, either solo or with Alan, and they were accompanied by Roland Friday. Margaret, Maggie and all concerned are to be congratulated on another pleasant, neatly pitched event which considerably helps the local branch of the Royal British Legion.

The Forthcoming Concert at St Andrew’s: There are still some tickets available for the Three Valleys Male Voice Choir, who will be in concert at St Andrew’s on Sunday, October 14 at 2.30 pm. The tickets are £8 each, and they’re available from the Post Office, or from the Rectory.

The FRA Annual Quiz: Coming to the village hall on Saturday, October 13, at 7 pm for a 7.30 pm start, this is a guaranteed sure-fire hit of an evening, with the event organised and produced by Bob and Dec. Remarkably, some tickets are still available at the Post Office. They are only £6 each, and won’t be there if you don’t make your move pronto.

Don’t forget that the highly anticipated arrival of the coveted 2019 FRA Calendar will be at the Quiz Night, and after that at the Fairlight Post Office and General Stores, and at Wakehams Farm Shop.

Advance notice of this year’s panto auditions: It’s all ahead of you, not behind you. The 2019 panto will be Rumplestiltskin, and director Wendy Hatch hopes to see lots of new faces as well as the more familiar when it comes to the auditions on Friday, October 12 in the village hall, starting at 7 pm. Big note on the fridge now!!

Give this a look: That’s Stonelynk Organics pressing of apples and the extraction of juice on Saturday, October 6, in the village hall from 10 am until 4.30 pm. Sounds very interesting!

Water, water everywhere: The leak at the top of Broadway is not that serious, as leaks go. What is disappointing is that the infill of the largish hole has been totally useless and has failed within ten days. One would have thought road repairing technology was a bit more advanced than that. What a waste of time and money.

Our First Responders are appealing: At one time, the village was spoiled for choice with more First Responders than most other villages enjoyed. With retirements and changes of personal plans, the number here now has become rather depleted, leading to the need to recruit. The commitment is to be available and on call for some four hours each week. The main objective of a first responder is to attend an emergency in the village, providing support prior to arrival of an ambulance. All new volunteers will be given appropriate training and relevant equipment, and no previous knowledge of first aid is required.
